A SAFE that was found in the back of a burnt-out van in Turton could have been stolen during a burglary at a Post Office.
Police are investigating an incident at Brandlesholme Road Post Office, Bury, in which a safe containing postal orders was stolen.
The safe was discovered by firefighters in the back of a van that had been abandoned and set alight in Knotts Brow, off Bury Road, last week.
Fire crews were called to the scene in the early hours of Friday, August 11, where they discovered a safe box, protected by four inches of concrete.
The back of the safe had been blown off and inside were a number of postal orders with an unknown value.
Police have confirmed that sometime between 1.30am and 5.30am on Wednesday, August 10, officers were called to Brandlesholme Road following reports of a burglary. Officers discovered someone had stolen a safe after breaking in through the back door and causing considerable damage.
Inquiries are ongoing and officers are working to confirm whether the stolen safe was the one found in the van.
Postal orders are similar to cheques for those without a bank account and they can be used to pay bills or shop by mail order.
They are available in any value up to £250 and can be cashed at any Post Office counter in 47 countries up to six months after the date of purchase.
Hamid Dor, who has been running the family business for 12 years, said: “We put everything away at night and nothing is left out. We have reported the incident to the police and given them a brief description of the safe and they are investigating.”
Police have arrested a man in relation to the burglary but they are unable to provide details at this stage.

Re: Post office safe found in burnt out van
If these postal orders are printed at the time of sale with any value, should the ones stolen have any value anyway?TrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/dis ... t_out_van/
