Outrage at proposed Royal Mail cuts to lost post claims

Hundreds of people have objected to Royal Mail plans to make it more difficult to claim compensation for lost post.

The UK’s main mail provider has proposed a number of changes to the way post is delivered, including leaving undeliverable items with a neighbour and cutting the time that people can claim compensation for missing items.

Currently, if post is lost or damaged, people can claim compensation up to 12 months after the item was posted. Royal Mail wants to reduce this to 90 days for a six-month period and then 60 days next year.

Compensation is currently up to £46 for normal post or up to £2,500 for special delivery.

Robert Hammond, director of post at Consumer Focus, says: ‘Royal Mail admits that almost a third of customers take more than two months to claim compensation.

As you can’t claim in the first 15 working days after posting, this would leave customers with only six weeks to claim.’

Royal Mail also wants to hold all undelivered items for 18 days at the delivery office, instead of 21 days.

The postal regulator, PostComm, launched a consultation on the proposals last week and has already received a record response from the public.
