A POSTMAN who was attacked by an eight-stone bulldog says he has been left with a serious phobia.
Terry Eccleston had to have stitches in his leg after he was set upon by six-year-old Winston while trying to deliver a parcel in Bronwen Avenue, Kinmel Bay.
The 61-year-old, who has been a postman for 10 years, agreed to speak about his ordeal in a bid to warn colleagues about the damage dangerous dogs can do.
He said: “I had a packet to hand to the dog’s owner, so I knocked on the door and she came to answer it.
“Before I knew it, the dog shot out and went straight for me. It didn’t even bark or growl, just locked its jaws onto my leg.
“I fell over and the lady had to drag the dog off me. I was covered in blood and in complete shock.”
Winston’s owner Joanna White, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, was handed a 12-month conditional discharge order at Prestatyn Magistrates Court last week.
District Judge Andrew Shaw also ordered her to pay Mr Eccleston £300 compensation and keep Winston under proper control.
Mr Eccleston, of Lon Wen, Rhyl, said: “I had to go to Glan Clwyd hospital and had quite a lot of stitches.
“I also had to go back to hospital a few times after that, because the wounds just kept pouring with blood for days.
“I couldn’t return to work for a long time because I was in too much pain. My left leg, which was bitten, was extremely painful and my right side was badly bruised as a result of falling over during the attack.
“I’ve now been left with a terrible fear of dogs. I can’t even walk down the street – if I hear a noise I think it might be a dog chasing after me.
“It’s very upsetting for me because I loved animals before this. I used to go and visit my uncle as a child, because he had kennels and we used to play with all the dogs.
“I hate them now and can’t even go near one. I have been advised by my doctor to seek counselling, but it is so severe I’m not sure it would help me.”
Terry is now back at work, but says he had lost confidence and is constantly worried about another attack.
“I just want to warn others with similar jobs to mine about the dangers,” he said.
“Many of my colleagues have had their fingers bitten by dogs.”

Postman speaks out after horror dog attack
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: Postman speaks out after horror dog attack
According to my dog owner after attack, "It never happened". This was her initial response.
Later, "It did happen, but they ( Me ) over-reacted."
Now, " I acccept 80% responsibility."
What was the other 20% attributed to...me doing my job properly by trying to deliver mail???

Re: Postman speaks out after horror dog attack
Hazard of the job just like many other jobs have their hazards, my line of thought on this case is it is not the owner of the dog or even the dog to blame it is upto Royal Mail to help our colleague in what he wants to do in his Royal Mail career, I fully understand his fear on delivery so now it is upto Royal Mail to let him decide what he wants to do if Royal Mail do NOT want to rehabilitate him.
P.S: hope the postie is soon rehabilitated
