ROYAL Mail is looking into alternative options so customers in Castleton can still collect parcels and post locally.
The delivery office on Castleton High Street, which sorts mail for delivery in the village and takes on post and parcels that couldn’t be delivered, will close.
These services will be done at the Whitby office at Crescent Avenue as of 22 August.
But mail bosses are looking at the possibility of having a point in the village where parcels can be picked up by customers who missed the original delivery.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: “The current system is people can collect from the delivery office or arrange a free delivery at a convenient time. What we are trying to do is set up a facility locally where customers can continue to do that but we have not got the details finalised yet.”
He added the most likely place this would be is Castleton post office, which will be unaffected by the changes, or another location in the community such as a shop.
Royal Mail said the decision to close the Castleton office was due to declining mail volumes and “increasingly tough trading conditions.”
The firm will be reimbursing staff who will have to travel the extra difference to get to work at the Whitby office and said the changes won’t mean compulsory redundancies but they have consulted each worker on the changes individually.
Royal Mail added that: “The move of the Castleton operation will provide improved working conditions, secure employment and a more cost-effective operation.
“Detailed planning has been taking place in recent weeks to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and staff at Castleton.”
Royal Mail is undertaking a modernisation programme across the country investing in new technology and equipment.
There are now 16 million fewer letters posted each day compared to five years ago.
