THE Speaker of the House of Commons continues to fight Princes Risborough's campaign to keep its delivery office and said he will not hesitate in taking it further.

MP John Bercow, Wycombe District Councillors and town councillors Alan Turner, Gary Hall and Bill Bendyshe-Brown, and mayor Eunice Clifford met four members of management from Royal Mail.

The office in Bell Street faces closure to be re-located six and a half miles away in Quilters Way, Aylesbury, which has caused outrage in the town with a packed public meeting and petition against it.

Cllr Turner told Princes Risborough Town Council on Tuesday evening that one of the Royal Mail representatives whose job it as to speak to parliamentary members on national issues “was the first to get a ticking off from John Bercow.”

He said Mr Bercow told him he expected a personal reply from the chief executive when he writes to him rather than a standard reply.

Cllr Turner said the Royal Mail representatives were left in “no uncertain terms” that the they expected a positive response to their suggestion to retain the service in Risborough.

He said they said something along the lines of how “well” Princes Risborough protested over this.

Cllr Turner said: “At that point John Bercow said 'Let me tell you something about the people of Princes Risborough. When they protest they are very polite, bordering on genteel, however do not be fooled by that- they are articulate, determined and you will find them a thorn in your side.”

He said Mr Bercow also made it very clear that if Royal Mail did no respond positively he would not hesitate in calling in the secretary of state.

They promised to come back to them in two weeks time which is this Friday.

Cllr Hall said when John Bercow had left the Royal mail workers looked at the Princes Estate, which the town council suggested they could move to.

He said they were extremely negative and were looking for excuses not to move there.

He added: “I don't like what is going on at all. I am very uncomfortable with it.”
