Postie saves grandma in Stanley car accident

A HERO postwoman summoned up strength she didn’t know she had to save a grandmother trapped under her car.

Mandy Joyce, 41, was on her rounds in Betjeman Close, East Stanley, on Wednesday when she heard a scream.

Pensioner Mary Hilary’s car had rolled backwards, trapping her underneath the wheels.

With no-one else around, postie Mandy dropped her letters and raced to the rescue.

Without a moment’s thought, she put her back to the car and heaved it off the 82-year-old in a bit to ease her pain.

She then called an ambulance and sat with Mrs Hilary until help arrived – before calmly getting on with her rounds.

Mandy, who has been a postwoman for nine years, said: “I had heard her scream, and ran over.

“There was no-one else there to help, so I didn’t even think about it, I just pushed that car back off her.

“I could see she was elderly, and her leg looked really bad. I didn’t try to move her though, I called for an ambulance and just tried to keep her conscious, calm and talking.

“She gave me the number of a family member so I called them to let them know what had happened. When the police and fire crews arrived I asked if I was still needed and they said no, so I carried on with my rounds.”

Mandy, who lives in the Craghead area of Stanley, added: “I know the lady vaguely from my rounds, and her family called me yesterday to tell me how she was.

“The said she needs plastic surgery on one leg and she has two fractures in the other, but she is doing all right.”

Now, Mandy has been nominated for a national Royal Mail award for her kind-heartedness by bosses.

But she modestly played down her heroics, saying: “I didn’t think about it – it’s just what you do when you see someone like that. I have a bit of a sore shoulder now, but the main thing is that the lady gets better.”

On Thursday, we told how Mrs Hilary, understood to be a retired bus driver, had been shopping and was unloading her car when the freak accident happened.

She was taking bags from the car, which was left in gear, when it rolled backwards trapping her underneath.

Emergency services were called at around 11.45am on Wednesday, and firefighters used a jack to lift up the car before cutting her free. She was then taken to the Newcastle’s RVI by the Great North Air Ambulance for treatment, where she is said to be in a stable condition.

Friend and neighbour Margaret Stothard said: “She was very lucky. She could have been crushed.

“It was very strange the way it happened. She came back from shopping and I waved at her, then she went to put the car away and it rolled back and she had tried to stop it.

“There was quite a lot of blood at the time. We’ve been friends for a long time and I was really worried about her.”

My God, what a bunch of cynics we have become. Instead of feeling pride at the actions of one of ours who undoubtedly saved this old lady's life, we immediately assume the worst from our employers.

If only RM didn't constantly give us reasons to be so cynical.

A few years ago a guy in my office was given a 'reward' of Argos vouchers after he had jumped from his van to stop a woman being mugged, now he'd be sacked for not locking the van. Management have a lot to answer for.

p.s. Well done Mandy!
