Peterborough - Royal Mail apology after late deliveries

ROYAL Mail has apologised saying teething problems with its new system have caused letters to be delivered as late as 6.30pm.

The postal giant has changed to a new system where more vans are used on delivery runs instead of bicycles and walking rounds because less letters are being sent compared to parcels that have been ordered through online shopping.

However, Royal Mail bosses have admitted that the changes brought in last month have resulted in delays in the post reaching some households in Peterborough.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused.

“These are only bedding in problems and we hope delivery times will get back to normal as soon as possible.

“We made changes to our delivery practices at the Peterborough Delivery Office last month as part of the ongoing modernisation of Royal Mail across the UK.

“As we deliver fewer letters but more packets and parcels than we did in the past, the switch to vans and trolleys from bicycles is improving health and safety by enabling us to take the weight off staff’s backs.

“It also eliminates the need to send out older, more polluting vans to replenish postmen and women on their rounds because we are now sending out all the mail, including parcels and Special Delivery items, in one go.”

The apology comes after complaints from city residents about how late the post has been.

Paul Benton, of Princes Street, Peterborough, said: “My daily post was delivered at 6.30pm on Wednesday. I think this is absolutely disgusting.

“I live in the city centre and there is at least one business in the same road and also the health centre is based there.

“Effectively, any urgent mail wouldn’t have been dealt with until the following day because everything closes at 5.30pm.”

Mark Hallam, of Bishops Road, Peterborough did not get his post until 3.45pm on Thursday.

He said: “If you are expecting something important it is not acceptable to get it at that time.

“I am thinking of writing a letter of complaint.”

The Royal Mail has said anyone who would like to give it feedback about its service to call their customer service team on 08457 740 740.
