Royal Mail plan to close the nursery at Mount Pleasant Sorting Office, in Farringdon Road, Farringdon, which provides subsidised childcare for workers.

But despite a protest by staff, parents and children in May, they say Moya Greene, chief executive of the facility, has refused to answer their concerns.

Now Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury, has arranged a meeting with Ms Greene to try and thrash out a deal.

Ms Thornberry said: “This service is valued by working parents and it is a regressive step to take it away.”

Paula Areses, 32, a parent and a post worker who attended the protest at Mount Pleasant, said: “If the nursery closes I will have to give up my job.

“Other nurseries are too expensive and don’t open early enough for postal workers.

“If I could speak to Moya Greene, I would tell her that this nursery is something the Royal Mail should be proud of. As a woman, she should help us to save the service, because it is women who will have to give up their jobs to look after their children.”
