Dear Colleague
MEDIA COVERAGE - ROYAL MAIL GROUP BUSINESS PLAN/JOB LOSSES
Over the weekend and today Branches will be aware of stories that have appeared in the press concerning 40,000 further job losses associated with the companies new Business Plan.
As a result of these stories it is important that Branches convey the following key messages to CWU members.
Firstly, the issue of job losses and CWU members’ future job security is the major concern for the Union and is prioritised in the Emergency Motions agreed at Conference.
Secondly, the Union is currently seeking a fuller explanation from the Royal Mail Group about all aspects of their new Business Plan and its detailed implications on job losses.
Thirdly, all references in these stories to CWU spokesmen are not official quotes from the Union.
In the coming weeks the Union are determined to get to the bottom of all the issues associated with Royal Mail’s new Business Plan and its linkage to the Government’s privatisation and separation agenda. We have already made clear that if we cannot reach satisfactory agreements on all these issues then a national industrial action ballot is inevitable.
Since Annual Conference the Union has now engaged with Royal Mail on meetings covering both national and London issues. These talks commenced following agreement from Royal Mail to put on hold the proposed movement of work on the 6th June from London Mail Centres. Talks will continue throughout this week and Branches will be updated in due course.
Yours sincerely
Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)
