Royal Mail worker suspended in probe

A POSTAL worker has been suspended over allegations of intentionally withholding mail.

The UK delivery service confirmed a Royal Mail employee had been suspended at its Barrow sorting office after a probe was launched by its internal security team.

The Abbey Road building sorts and delivers post right across Barrow borough.

A Royal Mail Group spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that an employee from the Barrow-in-Furness delivery office has been suspended following an investigation by the Royal Mail Security Team relating to the intentional delay of mail.

“Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of our employees, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely. We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

“Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers, we take decisive action to investigate. We constantly review our operation to ensure it’s as robust as possible and customers’ mail is secure.”

The spokeswoman added that the investigation was still in the very early stages and it could be weeks or months until the probe ended.

Any charges would be made by its internal security team and not the police. If the case came to court it would also be prosecuted by them.

When the Evening Mail rang the Abbey Road office a worker said she was unaware of the investigation. She added that all managers had gone home for the day.

A source said local postal workers were “shocked, disgusted and sickened at the revelation,” as it reflected badly on all staff working there.

To say the office was in total shock on Thursday is an understatement . If the allegations are true one of them will have gone home for more than the day :wave :wave .

Yes that thread now looks a bit gobbledygook because a lot of the sensative information was deleted . One post did give big clues away regarding the suspects rank and identity so was edited a little :chuckle . If the case gets to court I think the forum member who did that post might want the day off to attend the hearing , mind you so will a few more .

If we had run a book on who was the suspected culprit , that person would have been the rank outsider . If we had a brief today saying everything has been a misunderstanding and the office is all back to normal , I'd be less suprised than when the news broke last week .On Thursday morning , I've never heard so much chuntering and for some it was pure joviality ( which I can understand ) . If it does go to prosecution the employee is going to get some important mail over the next few months . There is an office split , some would jump at the chance to deliver it and for some it would be just to awkward . For me , I'm just glad I never got that walk on which the employee lives , in the recent repick .

Bad boy , bad boy what you going to do when they come for you . Allegededly that is .
