Unlucky callers are regularly left hanging on the telephone for more than 45 minutes at a time before getting to talk to an operator, the survey showed.
And 31 per cent of people say they have received a final notice on a bill or a final warning after failing to get through on the phone.
The second worst company for keeping customers on hold is Sky.
Callers to the service are often told their call will be answered in under 29 minutes, but are left waiting for much longer, the survey revealed.
The poll of 10,000 people, conducted by global research company www.onepoll.com, revealed that BT, NTL and Royal Mail all have terrible reputations for keeping people on hold.
