Vow on Post Office closure programme

I WANT to respond to scaremongering about the Government's plans to safeguard two cornerstones of our society – Royal Mail and the Post Office.

People have claimed that our plans put Post Office branches in places like Exeter under threat (Campaigners bid for Post Office 10-year work deal, Echo, May 17). This is not true. I can assure readers that the Post Office is not for sale.

There will be no programme of closures. Instead we have announced £1.34 billion of funding to maintain and modernise the Post Office network. And in return for the funding Post Office Ltd has to maintain a network of at least 11,500 branches.

The source of the scaremongering appears to be a survey produced by the Communication Workers Union. They say it highlights a threat to the network. Their claims are misleading, based on the hypothetical situations and leading questions in their survey.

They have called on the Government to include a 10-year contract between Royal Mail and Post Office Ltd in our Postal Services Bill. But the chairman and chief executive of Royal Mail have already made it clear that the two companies will sign an agreement for the longest legally permissible period before a future separation. I will ensure that commitment is met.

Regrettably, I suspect that there will continue to be a degree of scaremongering, but I am pleased.

Edward Davey MP

Minister for Postal Affairs

This bloke is a Muppet.

What is hypothetical about removing £ 720m Social Network Payment over the next 4 years from the PO Network, by sticking as many PO's into Mini Marts, Petrol Stations etc and cutting the pay by up to 60% so as to claw this £720m back? And he thinks that there will not be a Closure Program!

Even his own Regulating Body Consumer Focus has told him that Paula Vennels plan for the Network aint going to work.

There is'nt a smily with Shreks face on it so I will use his bosses :vcfo
