Mail delays after new delivery rule - Lynn

RESIDENTS in the Lynn area have faced long delays receiving their mail after a new cost-cutting delivery system was introduced.

Numerous members of the public have contacted the Lynn News to vent their anger at the Royal Mail service, with some claiming first class post has taken up to two weeks to arrive.

Others say they have not been receiving any mail at all, and residents in the Woottons claim they are only getting deliveries every other day.

One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said: “It is chaos out there.... post is not being delivered on time and you can go for days without mail.”

A spokesman for the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said postmen have been “struggling” since the new system was introduced on April 26 – but is confident the service will improve once teething problems are ironed out in the next few weeks.

Lynn and West Norfolk is one of the first areas to switch to the new system since Royal Mail launched its five-year cost-saving modernisation programme at the beginning of 2011.

A new computer-aided system has re-designed all the delivery rounds, and instead of using bikes and vans for different sized mail, two postmen now share a van for everything.

Adam Oakes, CWU’s Anglia divisional representative, said there have been problems as postmen get to grips with their new rounds, particularly in the Woottons area.

He said: “It’s not quite working there. One reason is because the longer driveways mean it takes longer to complete the round. Households in that area also get more leaflets.”

He also said it was possible some homes have only received mail every other day, as if postmen haven’t been able to complete their round by 3pm, it would be finished the next day.

Mr Oakes said CWU members and Royal Mail were working together to try and overcome the issues.

He said: “We are doing everything we can to get it to work and we think in a couple of weeks once the new system has bedded in, the service will be as good as before, if not better.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said the changes in Lynn were part of its ongoing modernisation, which was vital to “safeguarding the future of Royal Mail and for the one-price-goes-anywhere service valued by customers”.

He added: “As with any new system, it may take a while to bed in and we apologise to those who may experience some disruption to services.

“Whilst customers may see a different postman delivering their mail or their mail arriving at a different time, all our staff are committed to delivering a high level of service.”

I heard there were over 40 bags a day returned to the office in the first week. That's some disruption to service! Another Royal Mail success story. :nana

Since when were the CWU appointed as RM's apologists? Just who is Mr Oakes attempting to represent?

Its written into BT2010  Another reason I voted No.
9. Communication
The following principles will be adhered to:

 opportunities for joint communications will be proactively identified and encouraged

 where joint communication is not practical, communications should still wherever possible be discussed prior to issue

 communications should be constructive and focus on the aim to create a secure future for Royal Mail and its employees

 both parties recognise that some information must remain in commercial confidence

 Royal Mail public relations and the CWU Communications department will normally respond to media interest nationally

where the media contact is at local level a joint statement and/or media line should, wherever possible, be agreed by both parties

 if agreement cannot be reached, both parties will have respect for the other parties’ point of view

Point taken, TBT but I find it hard to accept that the CWU and RM are still in agreement over this.

How bad does it have to get before we can disagree?

But Mr Oakes is a Divisional Rep.
He has different priorities..............probably because he can see a much bigger picture. :cuppa
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
