FIVE postal workers have set off to run 860 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End non-stop to raise thousands of pounds for children’s charity CWU Humanitarian Aid.
Six runners in total, all from the Warrington and Crewe areas, make up the charity team attempting the epic challenge.
Mostly postmen, they will stop at Royal Mail delivery offices and mail centres along the 860- mile route over six consecutive days starting yesterday (wednesday).
The team will add a further 80 miles to the route to visit the CWU’s annual conference in Bournemouth on Sunday.
Relying completely on donations and sponsorship, the runners, aged 46 to 54, will complete their non-stop mission with the help of two fully fuelled support vehicles sponsored by Royal Mail as well as vital logistical support from parent union branches, North West Central Amal and Cheshire No. 1.
Carl Webb, CWU’s North West Regional Secretary, said: “What these guys are doing is just amazing and inspirational. The thousands they will raise will be used to purchase items for destitute children in Eastern Europe, things that children in the rest of Europe take for granted like new shoes, clothing to keep them warm and dry, beds and blankets and basic toys like footballs and skipping ropes.
“It’s not much to ask in the 21st century so I urge people to support them on their epic run.”
Challenge organiser Dave Taylor said: “When I initially came up with the idea of the six of us running non-stop from John O’Groats to Lands End they thought I'd lost my senses. To be honest, that’s still the prevalent view!
“What swayed the rest of the team to join me in cloud cuckoo land was the worthiness and the work of the fantastic charity that will benefit from the completion of the challenge.
“A big thank you must go to Royal Mail for loaning us the support vehicles and our union the CWU who have given us unbelievable support.”
