Postmen get bigger vans and trolleys in bid to improve mail service in Lincoln

POSTIES in Lincoln will be driving bigger vans and using hulking trolleys to keep up with the way we communicate.

In an age when letters are a thing of the past and households can have anything from clothes to vacuum cleaners delivered in a click, Royal Mail is catching up.

From today, workers will have special trolleys and use more vehicles to deliver the mail.

It is so they can better handle packages which are bigger and come in a myriad different shapes, thanks to internet shopping.

It means that delivery routes will be changed so people and businesses in Lincoln may receive their mail earlier or slightly later.

Andy Aston, collections and delivery sector manager at the Lincoln office, said: "The way in which we communicate with each other has changed dramatically. Unfortunately, fewer letters are now posted every day and Royal Mail needs to organise its delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.

"We also deliver more larger items and so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely.

"The new equipment will also reduce injury to our postmen and women from carrying heavier mail bags.

"We are proud of the high regard in which our postmen and women are held in Lincoln.

"The changes to delivery routes will mean that a member of our local and experienced team will still be delivering to our customers in Lincoln.

"The local delivery team and I are fully committed to providing a high quality of service that is as reliable and friendly as customers have come to expect from Royal Mail in Lincoln over many years."

Most deliveries will still reach their destination by noon but the exact times will depend on what route customers are on.

It may be earlier, but Royal Mail said it would depend on what sort of load posties have to sort out in the mornings.

Michael Armstrong, events and promotions manager from Lincoln Business Improvement Group, said: "It's common for businesses to e-mail rather than send letters, so it's no surprised Royal Mail is modifying its service.

"The only thing I use the post for now is sending DVDs and birthday cards, that sort of thing, and maybe that's the same for a lot of people."

Sales assistant at the Whisky Shop in Bailgate, Martin Aske, said: "I know we do get quite a few orders on the internet and so we are posting off quite a few boxes.

"I think we probably e-mail more now than ever."

Reads like a pre-emptive PR piece for P&L.

Are they really getting bigger vans and better trolleys than the rest of us?

We have just been told in my office that our cycles are being replaced with vans with "golf trollies". The change, we are told, is because van sharing is a "more cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of delivery" than bicycles. This must be Royal Mail's lie of the week. Which turkey thought that one up? Perhaps he has shares in Vauxhall.

Bit of a stupidly moronic comparison, is it not?
