Postal workers to vote on strikes

Thousands of postal workers are to be balloted for strikes in protest at plans to close sorting centres and cut jobs.
More than 3,000 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) in London will vote in the next few weeks on whether to launch a campaign of industrial action amid warnings that around 1,100 employees face the threat of redundancy in the capital.
London CWU official Mark Palfrey said: "Royal Mail's draconian attitude and its inability to stick to any agreements is nothing short of disgraceful. This has left the CWU with no other option than industrial action."
The ballot result is due on May 23.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "After a nine-month consultation with the CWU - which was extended twice at the union's request - Royal Mail announced in March a £69 million investment in its operations in the capital and plans to close two of seven mail centres in London with the loss of 751 jobs.
"The company is confident all of the changes can be handled on a voluntary basis and it has a very good track record in doing so.
"A full customer service continues as normal in London and everywhere else in the UK."

But will not guarantee it, compulsory redundancies on the horizon.

Re: Postal workers to vote on strikes
In my opinion there won't be any actual 100% "we don't have a job for you" compulsory redundancies.
I think RM will be very cute with this.
I think an offer of employment will be made to every single member who is displaced.
Whether that offer is anything near being suitable is a different matter but that won't be the point will it?

I posted something similar on my blog when BT2010 came out http://overpaidunderworked.blogspot.com ... d-and.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;fishtank wrote:In my opinion there won't be any actual 100% "we don't have a job for you" compulsory redundancies.

This section is again fairly replete with New Labour slogans such as
In addition to the job security commitments contained in the MTSF Agreement - Royal Mail and CWU confirm that the overarching objective is to deliver the transformation without recourse to compulsory redundancies.
So its not a promise merely an aim. Now which document does that remind me of. Perhaps the Labour Manifesto and Royal Mail Privatisation

Re: Postal workers to vote on strikes
If Royal Mail do not offer suitable alternative employment, then they will have been deemed to make redundant those involved and if this went to tribunal and Royal Mail has a redundancy package in place over and above statutory requirements, then those people who opt not to take the work offered by Royal Mail as it is not suitable, would be entitled to that redundancy deal. Happened to me in 1993. Company I worked for offered us different job which we said was not a suitable alternative. Company refused to pay out and gave us 12 weeks notice. Our union took this to tribunal and 500 of us were paid out the company redundancy terms. Mind you it took over a year as the union had to take four test cases to tribunals all over the UK, and won on every account. The company then decided not to defend any more cases and paid out.

Re: Postal workers to vote on strikes
Every mail centre worker is offered a job in deliveries many are not suitable.
ironic despite there only being a fraction of the necessary places rm never need to worry
because deliveries jobs are now as popular as prison sentences.

Re: Postal workers to vote on strikes
No one in east london mail centre has been offered a job in deliveries. There would be many who would be willing to go back to delivering ,because at the end of the day its a job,and being on the dole wont pay our mortgages. At the moment, the only thing being offered is at other mail centres, the majority of those an hour and a half drive away.

I believe this new strategy is to get people to leave the organization
thats why they are slow to to offer options.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

YES it should but the union will f**k about as usual, we all need to fight this bag of s**t.tmac wrote:shouldnt it be a national ballot
We need to scrap flexibility/swings and roundabouts in delivery offices cos its simply not working and fight for more full time staff, the work is there cos part timers are working overtime, daily!
CUT OFF!!!
