POSTAL workers and their supporters have taken to the streets in Bury over fears that the Government plans to privatise the Royal Mail.
They set up stall in the Market Place where shoppers were asked to fill in postcards addressed to Bury North MP David Nuttall.
The cards requested him to oppose the selling of the Royal Mail in line with the views of his constituents.
Ted Stead, branch secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) North West branch, said he was delighted with the support shown in the town.
He said: “Everyone voiced their anger that this Government wanted to sell off Royal Mail, with all that is happening with the cuts in the councils and NHS.
“Many people had forgotten about the insidious Bill to privatise our industry and were appalled when they were told how the Bill was being progressed.
“In four hours we collected more than 440 completed postcards, all calling on Mr Nuttall to listen to the voice of his constituents and not just to toe the party line and vote to sell-off our Royal Mail.”
Bury councillor Sandra Walmsley, a CWU official at O2, added: “The response from the people of Bury people was, as ever, extremely heart-warming.”
Mr Nuttall said: “Without urgent modernisation, both the Royal Mail and the post office network will continue to decline and contract.
“Whilst I fully appreciate the concerns of workers in the postal services industry, I welcome the fact that the Government is taking decisive action to bring private investment into the Royal Mail and protect our post offices.”
