A MAN who was awarded an MBE for helping others in the aftermath of the Lockerbie bombing, is retiring from Royal Mail after 36 years.
Fraser Walker, aged 63, was joined by friends and family as he left the sorting office for the last time on Friday.
The Lockerbie office has been relocated to Carlisle but Fraser decided against the move opting instead for early retirement from his transport manager position.
He told the Standard: “I had a fantastic time working for Royal Mail and I will miss it in many ways but I am looking forward to retiring.”
And he says his wife Maureen has plenty for him to do around the house.
He said: “My wife already has a ‘to do list’ for me. I love DIY and enjoy trying different things. I am looking forward to enjoying my retirement, going out on my bike and keeping myself busy.”
Fraser has been a volunteer for the British Red Cross for many years which he hopes to continue.
He said: “Volunteering is a great passion of mine. I train people in first aid and hope to carry on volunteering for as long as they need me.”
Fraser was honoured an MBE in 2000 for his work in connection with the Lockerbie bombing. He was the officer in charge of Lockerbie fire station at the time of the attack.
He added: “It was a great honour to receive an MBE for services to the fire station and the community. I feel very privileged to have received such an honour.”
