A THUG headbutted a postman who refused to hand over a giro cheque before delivering it to his house – then wielded an axe at a workman who tried to intervene, a court heard.

Karl Bradley, aged 40, of Lingfoot Crescent, Jordanthorpe, Sheffield, attacked postman Gary Elder on nearby Lingfoot Place, after warning him: “Don’t mess with me – you don’t know who you’re dealing with.”

Sheffield Crown Court heard Bradley then produced a foot-long axe from his jacket, waving it at a workman who attempted to stop the violence.

Bradley, who was locked up for 15 months, later tested positive for cocaine and heroin, and had previous convictions for possessing knives and offensive weapons.

Zaiban Alam, prosecuting, said Mr Elder was on his rounds at around 1.30pm on August 19 last year when Bradley approached him and asked him whether he had any post for his address.

Ms Alam said: “Mr Elder replied that he hadn’t got that far on his rounds, and it was his first time in the area

“The defendant said he would probably be another hour and a half before he reached his address and said ‘I really need that letter’, then walked away.”

Mr Elder carried on delivering post, and was leaving a block of flats when Bradley approached him again, telling him: ‘You’ve got to help me out – otherwise I’m going to prison and it will be your fault’.

“Mr Elder replied that he wasn’t able to give out letters to people on the street,” Ms Alam said.

“The defendant followed him, blocking his path. His manner was aggressive. He said to Mr Elder: ‘Don’t mess with me, you don’t know who you’re dealing with’.”

Bradley then headbutted the postman, striking him on his right temple, the court heard.

“He felt pain, and was shocked,” Ms Alam added. “The postman acquiesced to the defendant’s demands and said he could have his letter.”

The workman, who was on a job nearby, saw the incident and told Bradley to leave the postman alone.

Ms Alam said: “The defendant told him to mind his own business. The workman was undeterred with this response, and said ‘Leave him alone – I’ve got my drill’.”

Bradley then produced the axe, which was a foot long with a six-inch blade, and wielded it at the workman. Meanwhile, the postman escaped and called the police.

The court heard Bradley made no comment in interview and the weapon has never been recovered.

James Baird, defending, said: “It’s only really in his late 30s that he’s ever left his mother’s home and began to live an independent life. It appears while living at Lingfoot Crescent he has on occasions had problems actually receiving his giro.

“His post was later than normal, he saw the postman and decided to retrieve his cheque quickly.”

Judge Alan Goldsack QC said the attack was a frightening incident, adding: “The postman was a public servant doing his job. He’s entitled not to be treated the way you treated him.”

Bradley admitted affray and was jailed for 15 months, minus 36 days already spent in custody.

He had been remanded on a bench warrant after failing to attend a previous court appearance.

Hope they stopped his giro as well and refused housing when he leaves prison.

15 months - what a frakking joke. For an unprovoked attack and wielding a dangerous weapon in public - presumably with intent to harm. Was also dosed up on a cocktail of drugs which explains, but does not justify, his behaviour. These kinds of people are a menace, they should be locked up for years and years.

It's probably easy to say this now, but the second this twat showed up for the 2nd time should be the time to start getting out the old mobile, if that is, you've got one, and to phone 999. Of course, that's all with hindsight now, and besides who is going to be able to 2nd guess what some nutter is going to do next?

This nutter obviously hadn't prepared himself the first time round, so seeing him so soon before popping his letter through his letterbox, would have made me perhaps soften my tactics towards him, like, asking for some ID. At this point too, I'd have probably tensed up ready for a fight, making sure that I kept a certain distance -- axe-length, say.

The point is, he only got his axe out after he had headbutted a fellow postie, so all I'm saying is that he needed to pump himself up with more aggression and wasn't prepared to use it straight away, which kind of tells me he was actually building himself up for it. So probably telling him what his aggressive side wanted to hear -- the bit about not being able to give letters out on the street, which of course is the correct procedure -- is unfortunately the fuel that he needed to get more aggressive.

Personally though, I would have fashioned a response depending on how aggressive his behaviour was the first time round. If he was not threatening the first time round, and you thought it not too much of a crime not to have asked for his ID there and then, then one can only surmise from his elevated 2nd attempt (or nut-case mode) as being very serious.

Well what impresses me the most about all this is the workman. Few people would have actually intervened so much kudos to him! :Applause :Applause :Applause

I am the wife of the said postie - I can say he has been to hell and back re this attack.

He was a quiet timid person before this, but now he is really nervous of new people.

15 months is a joke he won't serve half of that - my husband has to live with this for the rest of his life.

Although we have often had conversations about what I would have done etc etc no-one can truly say what they would have done unless they were in the situation.

I am proud of you Gary - what you did that day was truly courageous.

Gary owes his life to the workmen - for without his intervention we may not have been telling the same story.

And so you should be, proud that is. People don't realise how devastating these sort of things can be. I speak as the brother of someone killed nearly 20 years ago by a drunk driver. The sentence was a farce and he only served about half, if that. To top it all, he had previous going back at least 20 years for the same thing. He was awaiting trial for another same offence only months previous, but because the courts are so slow he was able to commit the offence that killed my brother. Hope in time he recovers and is able to make some sense of it all and move on.

Thank you to all, will pass all your comments on to Gary - I just hope that this never has to happen to anyone else and hopefully this article gives an insight to other Postmen to be more vigilant.

The newspaper article is not completely true the axe was wielded at Gary and the workman but as newspapers do they don't report the truth just the misguided tale.

Tell your Gary I know what fear can do. I know, I've been there on more than one occasion. It fills you with wanting to protect yourself almost to the point of overkill, and I mean the 'kill' part.

When I worked for another company -- some taxi garage in South London, I once, not very cleverly, intervened in a situation where some nutcase was whacking an object repeatedly over some woman's head. Well, me and a couple of other guys were trying to haul him off from a squatting position, as he was not being co-operative enough, and wouldn't budge from that position. So there's me taking a few paces back and then swiftly kicking him in the head with my knee (I had strong knees back then). Well anyway, he instantly stood up, and started to shout at me, in a rather violent manner, and threatened to come back and kill me. :nervous

It must have taken me about 6 months to finally get over it, and to stop carrying all those silly kitchen knives, too. :nervous
