Half of all post offices 'will close under Royal Mail sell off'

HALF our post offices will be killed off under plans to stop them selling insurance, foreign currency and road tax, warn postmasters.
More than 6,000 branches stand to lose half to three-quarters of their business and will be forced to close, it is feared.
Under the Postal Services Bill, branches earning less than £60,000-a-year will be reclassified as Local, Basic or Outreach offices offering a pared-down service. But under the changes – part of the Tory-led Government’s privatisation plans – the smaller branches will not handle parcels over 5kg and profitable services such as transferring money abroad will go to main offices.
It is a devastating blow to the 11,900 branches days after they lost a £20m-a-year contract to cash pension and benefit cheques to Citibank.
A breakaway group inside the National Federation of Sub Postmasters is planning protests, including tabling an amendment to the Bill in the House of Lords this week. The federation’s Trittal Singh said: “Thousands of closures will be inevitable.”
And Billy Hayes of the Communication Workers Union warned: “Taking business away from the Post Office on top of privatising Royal Mail will cause the biggest closure programme we’ve ever seen.” But Royal Mail described the claims as “alarmist”, adding the Post Office is committed to a “long-term, sustainable future for the network and sub-postmasters”.

Depending on if the PO network is sold off sepertate from RM Letters and from ParcelForce (I hope that privitisation never happens), what would stop the PO network from selling products of DHL, CityLink, etc. We could end up with whoever buys RM Letters charging whoever buys the PO network for collecting from them.

whichever way the network is sold off/chopped up
you can bet it will be some half arsed version that is tied up in bureaucracy and seem specifically designed not to work or provide a service

Does that mean Billy has accepted the sell off? Perhaps PROPOSED privatisation may have been better........TrueBlueTerrier wrote:A breakaway group inside the National Federation of Sub Postmasters is planning protests, including tabling an amendment to the Bill in the House of Lords this week.
