Consumer Focus response to announcement of strike action by CWU which will affect post office counter staff.

Published: 4 March 2011

Andy Burrows, postal services expert at Consumer Focus said:

‘Today’s announcement of strike action by CWU is an issue for management and unions to resolve. But consumers will want it resolved quickly and will want talks to avoid the risk of future strike action.

‘Although the Crown post office network accounts for just 373 out of almost 12,000 post offices, one in five of all visits are to these high streets branches. The Crown network provides vital financial and public services, for example processing of passport applications, identity services, and the full range of Post Office banking products, that many people rely upon and that most smaller branches just can’t deliver. Any significant disruption here will hit consumers.

‘There need to be good contingency measures to minimise the impact and would urge both sides to come together so we can keep Crown Post offices open for the people who need them.’
