A Royal Mail driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries this morning following a collision at Junction 11.

At around 4.50am a white articulated lorry collided with a Roya Mail box van at the Junction 11 exit slip on the eastbound carriageway.

The driver of the van, a 45-year-old man from Swindon, was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital with serious injuries where his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Motorway chaos after two-lorry smash

MOTORISTS can expect severe delays on the M4 as recovery teams clear up wreckage from a two lorry smash.

Traffic is reduced to two lanes eastbound at junction 11 near Three Mile Cross after a Royal Mail lorry was in collision with an articulated lorry shortly after 5am today.

Crews, including the Newbury-based Heavy Rescue Unit (HRU), from four fire stations spent nearly two hours pn the delicate operation of freeing the Royal Mail driver from his mangled cab before paramedics took him to the Royal Berkshire Hospital where he is being treated for leg injuries.

Caversham Road fire station manager Jess James said: "This was a severe impact and a technically demanding extrication.

"We had to stabilise the vehicles to prevent any further injury to the man and allow the crews to work as safely as possible and deploy the heavy cutting gear, rams and spreaders as effectively as possible."

The articulated lorry driver was uninjured.
