Llandudno postie nominated for national childrens champion

A POSTMAN who rescued a football team for disabled youngsters from folding has been nominated for a national award from children’s charity Barnardo’s.

Llandudno postie David Hanson is up for a Children’s Champions Award which goes to people who, according to the judges, go an extra mile for kids.

He was nominated by one of his Royal Mail bosses, Mark Henson, who said: “When I went to see his team play I was humbled. We can all learn something from him.”

Town councillor David stepped in nine years ago when the Llandudno Multi Disability Football Club’s under-16s team couldn’t find a coach.

He says he couldn’t bear the thought of the youngsters not being able to play the game they love.

“There was no way I could let that happen. I wanted to help them gain some independence and learn new skills,” he explained.

As a result of his coaching the team have been Welsh champions in its disability league for the past three years.

He has also helped to put the multi disability club on its feet financially.

A part-time DJ, David has organised special cabaret nights and sponsored walks.

He also trains the club’s senior team and has taken it to compete in Europe.

In 2005 the club won one of our Weekly News/ ScottishPower Your Champions awards, and the same year David’s charity work was recognised by an award from his Royal Mail bosses.

“The pleasure I get out of working with the players and also seeing them enjoying themselves more than compensates me for the time and the effort I put in,” he commented.
