TRIBUTES have been paid to an award-winning postman from Thundersley who lost his battle with cancer.

Ken English, of Greenleas, was described as a ‘popular, loving and well-loved gentleman’ by relatives following a service at Pitsea Crematorium on Wednesday.

The 73-year-old received recognition for his hard work after winning the Yellow Advertiser’s ‘Unsung Hero’ award in March 2001 after being nominated by Castle Point Council.

The great grandfather, who married wife, Sheila, in 1959, had been a postman for 25 years and operated in the Rayleigh Road and Thundersley Common areas.

Daughter, Lynn Kemp, 49, said: “I will always remember him on his rather large red postman’s bike with the biggest smile on his face.

“He was so popular. When he finished his round over the Christmas period, his bag was larger than he started in the morning because of all the gifts he received.

“I remember the fruit, presents and the odd bottle of whisky. My father was an amazing man, he will always be in our hearts.”

Father-of-one Ken had lived in Castle Point for more than 50 years and used to work at Shell Haven and for shopfitters, Pope and Barrell, in Benfleet.

The canary breeder first discovered he had cancer of the navel cavity five years ago before being given the all clear.

However, he was diagnosed withprostate cancer in 2009 before losing his battle with the disease on Monday, January 10.

All proceeds raised from Mr English’s funeral have been donated to Little Havens Children’s Hospice and Help for Heroes.
