A POSTIE’S partner ended up giving him a special delivery of their own when their baby was born at home.
Postman Dean Chappell, 42, found himself delivering his own son on Sunday after he and his partner, Sally Woods, left it too late to get to the hospital.
Sally, 37, went into labour around 10.30am, but the couple were reluctant to go to the hospital straight away, because they had been sent home after arriving too early when she had their other son, Ross, 11 months before.
The postman admitted he panicked when he realised his partner was about to give birth and they couldn’t make it to the hospital in time.
Quickly dialing 999, he followed the instructions of the emergency services operator and was able to deliver his 9lbs 8oz son, Jay, on the kitchen floor of their home in Market Close, Colchester.
He said: “I have gone through every emotion. I was trying to keep her calm, deliver the baby and listen to what the operator was telling me, all at the same time.
“If someone had told me I would be delivering my son, I would never have thought I could have done it. But when it happens to you, you just somehow get on with it. That evening I just sat in the pub with my pint and I must admit I felt quite emotional – I think I was in shock.”
He added: “I can’t wait to tell my son the story of how he was born. It is quite special really.”
Ambulance crews, who the couple praised for their help, arrived in time to cut the new baby’s umbilical cord and the perfectly healthy new arrival was taken to hospital for routine checks.
