Pubspy: The Porter and Sorter, East Croydon

Pubspy is a big fan of soap operas - all those murders, deliberate fires and adulterous flings are a nice escape from the real world.

Imagine my delight then when, last Friday, I found a pub enjoying a little soap opera of its own.

Sat in a corner of The Porter and Sorter I watched quite happily as the drama revolved around me.

To my right, a pair of co-workers held hands and flirted in a blatant office affair, straight ahead, a woman who had had a little too much to drink took a rather undignified tumble and had to be carried out (to the sound of applause from the less than sympathetic crowd), while on my left a group of men admired some ridiculous footwear one of them was wearing while also eyeing the girls at a nearby table.

Then there was the man with the crazy big hair who scurried past on his way to the toilet before Jesus popped in for a pint - or at least a very good look-a-like for him did.

It was all very entertaining and certainly changed my opinion of what I thought was a fairly run-down old man's pub.

Having had a recent renovation, the old drunken guy smell that used to fill the air had gone, the decor was posh but not too posh, and the clientele was a good mixture of youngsters starting their Friday night shenanigans and those out for a few pints after a hard week at work.

Being next to the main Royal Mail sorting office, you can expect lots of posties in there in the afternoon to complement the plenty of post-related artwork and caricatures on the wall.

My Peroni did not come in a Peroni glass though which is a big no-no for me and the toilet floor was covered in water (at least I hope that's what it was) which is never good.

It entertained me on a Friday night though which is no bad thing.

DECOR: **** Recently renovated and better than expected.

PRICE: *** £3.90 for a Peroni is about right these days and there were plenty of food offers on the go.

ATMOSPHERE: *** Don't expect anything too classy, it was full of the fun of an early Friday night in Croydon.

STAFF: *** Helpful Aussie barman got to me quickly and efficiently so no complaints.

DRINK: ** A good assortment but just the standard ones really, nothing to blow your socks off.

Wow that takes me back.
Spent many a friday afternoon in there after the 2nd delivery.
It always was a bit of a dive, but it had a cracking atmosphere when the Posties were in.
I actually had my leaving do there, before moving to sunnier climbs
It begs the question,what is the best Postie pub in Britain?
Anyone want to put names forward?
Sadly the one next to our office is now a poncy restuarant
