MID-Worcestershire’s MP Peter Luff has urged Royal Mail chiefs to be very careful about protecting mail services in the county.

He has acted after receiving a letter from Heulyn Gwyn Davies, senior external relations manager, informing him that the future of the Worcester mail centre on Wainwright Road, together with that of other mail centres in the West Midlands, is under review.

Peter Luff MP urged Royal Mail to be aware that “large parts of rural Worcestershire rely on the services provided by the current Worcester facility.”

In his letter Mr Luff said: “I do understand the changes that you are having to make but any recommendation to close the Worcester mail centre would only be acceptable with a cast iron guarantee that the local services that it provides will be replaced with a facility at least as good. I am concerned that you are looking at this issue on a regional basis and it may well be that there is greater capacity to align the service provided by our mail centre in Worcester with those in the South West.”

He added: “Of course Royal Mail faces real challenges with declining mail volumes, but to draw artificial regional boundaries and to ignore the close relationship of rural Worcestershire with that of rural Gloucestershire, would be a serious mistake.”

The review is expected to take around six months and Royal Mail has said that they aim to publish a final decision by summer 2011.
