Concern grows for Westhill service

There are fears over the future of the postal sorting office in Westhill.

Royal Mail was unable to give an assurance that the office in Westhill would stay open.

A spokeswoman said: “The lease for the Westhill delivery office expires in September, and Royal Mail is currently looking at all options available.”

When asked if the future of employees at the centre had been discussed, she said: “There is no further information to add at this stage.”

Westhill and Elrick Community Councillor Iris Walker said shutting down the office would seriously affect people in the area: “The Community Council would be very concerned if the sorting office in Westhill were to be closed.

“It is a busy, efficient and well-used service. Closure of the sorting office would have a significant impact on local jobs and postal services.

“We know that Royal Mail have been working on re-design of services over a period of time but as a Community Council we would welcome more information and an opportunity for discussion about their plans for the future of the Westhill sorting office.”

Westhill and district councillor Gurudeo Saluja OBE said he is committed to opposing the closure of Royal Mail’s Westhill sorting branch.

“I believe that this would be a retrograde step which would have a negative impact on the local economy, the community and the Royal Mail itself.

“Westhill is a growing community with new housing and industrial developments in the pipeline, all of which will bring more business to the Royal Mail.

“Without a sorting office in Westhill, there would be difficulties and expense in getting mail out to Westhill and beyond to outlying areas.”

Cllr Mark Cullen has also assured residents that he will fight any loss of the local service.

The councillor, who lives in Westhill, said: “Over the next few weeks I am going to pressure Royal Mail, as well as the council to try and get some answers about what is happening with the postal office.

“From what I have heard there is the possibility of staff being relocated if the site is closed.

“A lot of the staff who work there live in Westhill, and I am sure they don’t want to travel to the other side of town to get to their place of work.

“Royal Mail employ more than 30 staff at the postal office and handles mail not only for Westhill residents, but to the surrounding rural areas and villages of Skene, Dunecht and Kirkton of Skene.”

It is understood that Nanette Milne, Conservative MSP for the North East has already written to Royal Mail to express her concern following news that the Royal Mail’s Westhill Delivery Office at the Westhill Industrial Estate could close.

from what i understand the landlord wont renew the lease to royal mail as rm has caused a lot of probs with the other leasees lol. so probs will relocate them to the spare space in the mail centre in aberdeen about 6 miles away!!1
