Postman gunned down outside his West Hendon home thanks neighbours for saving his life

A POSTMAN shot at point blank range in the back and leg with a sawn-off shotgun has spoken of the moments after he was gunned down.

The 24-year-old, who asked not to be named, described it as “the worst pain I have ever felt” after being blasted after leaving his mother's flat in a block in the West Hendon estate.

The attack, just after 5am on November 25, sent shockwaves through the estate and sparked a massive police investigation as the postman, who was heading out to work, fought for his life.

Neighbours rushed from their flats to find him lying on the floor in agony, bleeding profusely from wounds to his back and upper-right thigh.

He said: “I left my flat and I saw this guy in the corridor but didn't think anything of it. I felt this pain in my back and thought he was trying to kick me over, to rob me or something like that.

“The force had knocked me over, but I turned to look at him and he shot me again in the leg and ran off.

“I was in so much pain and drifting in and out of consciousness, but there were a lot of people who came to help me. They got towels and held them on the wound.

“There was one man in particular who took control who I want to thank. I don't know who he was but he pressed the towel into my back to stop the bleeding. If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't be alive I don't think.”

He added: “When my girlfriend and mum came out at first I was more worried about them, I thought the bloke might come back and try to do something to them.

“I just kept wanting to go to sleep and apparently my eyes were rolling back in my head, but one of the neighbours kept screaming my name telling me to to stay awake.”

When police arrived they took over the treatment before paramedics came and transferred the victim to hospital, where he spent three days in a coma.

Now he faces a “long process” of rehabilitation, learning to walk again.

He added: “Because it was a shotgun the bullet shattered when it entered my back and severed a lot of nerves, so I don't have a lot of feeling there.

“I've had operations and a lot of treatment and I'm still in a wheelchair, but I'm determined to get there.

“I think when I do go back to work I will have to have an office job, I won't be able to go out on the rounds like I used to, I won't be able to walk as far.”

However, the attack has left more than just physical scars.

He said: “I'm just trying to carry on. It makes me scared sometimes, when I'm in a corridor by myself I get a bit anxious.

“If I can hear people walking behind me when I'm in my wheelchair I get anxious, it just brings it all back to me.

“I still get worried for my mum and girlfriend having to live there, but you have to get on with it.

“I just want to thank everyone who helped me that morning, they really did help to save my life.”

A man has been arrested over the shooting and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
