SURGING sales at Amazon highlight a huge shift in the way we shop and the need for change in the postal service that delivers the stuff we buy over the internet.
Letter writing is in decline, under attack from emails and texts, but parcel delivery is booming thanks to online shopping.
The first is a problem and the second an opportunity for the Royal Mail ahead of likely privatisation.
Royal Mail’s chief Moya Greene, poached last year from Canada Post, is tasked with modernising a business which lags behind overseas rivals in the use of new technology. Too many letters and parcels are still sorted by hand but, given the state of the public finances, taxpayers cannot be expected to stump up the cash needed to drag the service into the 21st century.
The Postal Services Bill going through the House of Lords will pave the way for privatisation, though regulatory change and EU approval are also needed. It will be one of the most sensitive of all privatisations, but Amazon shows how the world has changed.
The Royal Mail is rightly regarded as a national treasure, but without new capital it is in danger of turning into a Victorian relic.
RESEARCH published this week shows that powerful chief executives can have a big impact on a company’s performance by leading it down a so-called “deviant strategy”.
It is nothing to do with what they get up to in their private lives but is about them doing something different from their rivals. A dominant boss may hit on a good idea that beats the competition, but there is an equal risk of them messing things up.
The report, published in the Journal of Management Studies, says the key thing is to have a strong board of directors who can prevent bosses choosing damaging deviant strategies while giving them free rein to pursue successful ones.

Re: ROYAL MAIL MUST ADAPT TO AMAZON REVOLUTION
I've said it myself, many times. Both on here, and in person: If RM don't start taking the packets seriously, and putting the neccessary resources to deliver them, in place. Then we'll face even worse decline than we're already seeing. How many times have we read on here (and of course experienced in person) Packets being left, in order to get the letters out?
That's the only major growth area in the Postal Market. And RM are almost totally ignoring them.
I suspect it's deliberate, to make Privatisation seem like a good idea.
