THE battle to save Bourne’s delivery office has ended in victory.

Workers at the site in West Street, Bourne, have been battling tirelessly against Royal Mail’s proposal to shut the office and move the operation out of town.

Now Royal Mail officials have confirmed the plan has been dropped.

They say it had nothing to do with the campaign which included a petition signed by 1,000 people.

However Mark Cooke from the Communication Workers’ Union, which represents some of the workers, says the campaign was instrumental to the office staying put.

Mr Cooke, the union’s area representative said: “I think what we did would have had an impact. So, thanks again to everyone who backed us.

“Royal Mail has told us now that the plans are not going to happen and I am absolutely over the moon.

“This is fantastic and great news. I am so happy for all the staff who thought their jobs would be moved elsewhere.

“We must thank all the readers of the Mercury and everyone who has supported us in our fight against the closure.”

Mr Cooke said people’s support had proved vital.

The office employs 32 people with 20 of those workers living in Bourne.

Royal Mail announced in October it was looking at closing the office.

A spokesman said support against the planned closure would not have been taken into account when making the decision.

She said: “Having talked to our people and reviewed our options, there are currently no plans to close Bourne delivery office.”

Bourne mayor Pet Moisey said it was brilliant news.

She said: “We need to keep employment and services in the town. We must say well done to our postmen and women who deliver to us.

“The main thing is we can keep the delivery office going. We need to at least try to keep what Bourne already has.”

It is very likely that this has been postponed due to insufficient space at the proposed DO that would have taken the work.

Where is the new proposed DO ?
I'm guessing Peterborough.
