Tayside Police investigate 'dumped' mail report

TAYSIDE Police are investigating reports of undelivered mail being found in a bin in Monifeith.

This is just the latest in a long line of complaints to have hit the Royal Mail at Dundee east in recent weeks.

Customers have been disappointed with the customer service they have received since a new system - for which each employee gained an £800 bonus - was put into place.

To make matters worse a heavy spate of bad weather at the end of last year and in the run-up to Christmas led to a significant pile-up of undelivered mail.

A Monifeith resident said that the dumped mail was just a continuation of the “fiasco” at the Royal Mail sorting office in Dundee east.

He continued to say that a neighbour had appeared at his doorstep one evening last week carrying the mail that had been dumped in a bin.

The neighbour then decided to deliver the mail that should have been delivered by a Royal Mail postal worker.

He also expressed concerns that at least one package he had ordered online had not yet been delivered and worried that it might be lying in someone’s dustbin.

The man continued to say that he had tried to make a complaint to Royal Mail on Saturday, January 22, but there was no-one available in the office at that time.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail has confirmed that reports are being investigated. She said: “Royal Mail are grateful to residents for bringing this incident to our attention.

“We are working with Tayside Police on this matter.”

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: “Tayside Police can confirm they received a complaint from a resident in Monifieth about mail being disposed of in a bin.

“Several items of mail were discovered which the complainer then public spiritedly delivered to neighbouring addresses.

“Tayside Police is continuing with enquiries and are working closely with Royal Mail to this end.

“Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should call 0300 111 2222 or speak to any officer.”

Royal Mail is continuing to work towards clearing the build-up of post that was still to be delivered by carrying out a “blitz” last weekend.

Extra staff were also been brought in to clear the backlog of letters in the DD4 and DD5 postcode areas during the week leaving weekend staff to concentrate on parcels.

It is hoped that residents in Dundee East will now receive their long-awaited packages and letters.

The Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “The Dundee East delivery office is now almost back on track.

“We have been and still are completely focused on providing our customers with the service they expect and deserve.”
