Ilminster post office worker Sandra retiring after 25 years

A POST Office worker is retiring this week after a number of years service in Ilminster.

Sandra Beckley has worked both at the front desk and in the sorting office at the Post Office in East Street for 25 years.

In that time, Sandra has seen many changes. Post Offices have closed in a number of villages in the area and things have increasingly been dealt with more centrally in Ilminster.

This Friday, January 28, Sandra will be leaving the office for the last time and will certainly miss her colleagues.

Sandra said: “I’m going to miss my friends - all of them – they have been a really smashing bunch of people to work with and I’m going to miss the job.

“You don’t get the chance very often – but I have been lucky enough to see both sides of the business – working in the sorting office and on the counter.”

But there is one thing Sandra, who is a keen collector of Rupert the Bear merchandise won’t miss – the early starts.

Sandra added: “Starting at 4.20am for that many years isn’t always good for the social life! I will be glad to enjoy a bit more sleep in the mornings now.”

Sandra’s colleagues were also quick to praise their well-loved team member. Nigel Francis, supervisor at the Ilminster Delivery Office, has known Sandra for 23 years.

Nigel said: “She’s brilliant really - we’re going to miss her a lot and I’m not sure what we will do without her. Sandra joins in with all our office banter and has the patience of a saint.”
