Royal Mail apologises for missed deliveries in Lichfield

A LICHFIELD man has hit out at the Royal Mail for its repeated failure to deliver post to residents on Boley Park.

John Jones told the Mercury there was no delivery of mail to Darnford Lane on Saturday, January 8, and residents nearby received no delivery on Monday, December 10.

"I am not blaming our postman – we have a very good postman in Darnford Lane," said Mr Jones.

"Lichfield's sorting office must be in a mess."

Mr Jones checked with 25 neighbours on the Saturday and, of the odd house numbers, none had received post.

He said that two days later a member of the Royal Mail management team delivered post in his road.

"Perhaps management found no delivery officers were willing to take on two days' worth of post to deliver without extra financial reward," added Mr Jones.

"No such extra payments now occur, as management at all levels strive to achieve their financial bonus on the basis of 'minimal costs used to deliver post'".

Mr Jones suspects there is a backlog of mail and parcels from Christmas and Royal Mail Letters failed to implement a system to deal with it.

He acknowledges the weather problems but believes the new deliveries of mail to the local delivery office 'simply went to the top of the older intake'.

"This explains why customers were receiving envelopes and packages posted well before the Royal Mail's suggested latest posting date but still did not get delivered until well over a week after Christmas, when the snow and ice had long since disappeared," Mr Jones added.

"People have had credit card bills delivered after payment was due – it is very disappointing. And all this at a time when the postage rates are going up substantially in April. It will be the biggest increase in Royal Mail history"

Mr Jones urged others who have experienced a decline in service to complain to The Customer Service Manager by writing to Royal Mail Letters, Freepost, PO Box 740, Plymouth, PL9 7YB.

A spokesman for Royal Mail Group Ltd said: "There has been slight disruption to deliveries in Lichfield due to staff resource issues.

"Staff responded to the situation and worked hard to restore normal service with managers drafted in to support the operation where necessary.

"We apologise to any customer who may have been affected."
