Royal Mail deliver on Sunday to clear backlog

The Royal Mail sent out hundreds of postmen today to help clear the backlog of undelivered mail caused by the snow in the run up to Christmas.

Sunday deliveries are highly unusual and only usually made in the run up to Christmas or after severe strike action.


However, thousands of householders have complained that have been receiving Christmas cards as recently as last week, with many claiming some post has taken three weeks to be delivered, after the Royal Mail struggled with the difficult weather.

The postal service has insisted that any delayed letters or cards were "isolated" incidents and the vast bulk of the Christmas mail bag – consisting of two billion parcels and letters – was delivered by December 24, despite many households in the country being snowed in, and many postmen being injured by slipping on icy roads.

However, it has taken action to clear the last remaining undelivered items by drafting in 500 postmen in parts of Warwickshire, Kent, Lancashire, Cheshire and East Scotland on Sunday.

Nadhim Zahawi, the Conservative MP who sits on the Commons Business Select Committee, said the area round his constituency in Stratford Upon Avon had been badly affected.

He said: "I received an enormous volume of complaints regarding the poor performance of Royal Mail before, during and after Christmas. It appears that the post is still far from back to normal, with what is clearly a very large backlog existing at the sorting office and haphazard deliveries across the area."

Readers of The Daily Telegraph also complained that they were receiving Christmas cards well after Epiphany, while the Forum for Private Business said that its newsletter, sent out first class on December 13, had failed to arrive with many of its members until January 12 or 13.

Consumer Focus, the official watchdog, said it too had received anecdotal evidence that the backlog was larger than Royal Mail was claiming.

The Royal Mail said that the unusual Sunday delivery was not just to clear the backlog, but also to help postmen in certain areas get used to a new system of delivery, using two workers in a van rather than an individual postman walking with a bag.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We have had some reports of individual items of Christmas mail arriving after Christmas. We apologise to any customer if individual items of mail posted by our recommended posting dates did not arrive in time for Christmas.

“In the small number of places where there has been some disruption, we have taken a range of additional measures. This Sunday approximately 500 postmen and managers will be working in a small number of areas where there is some disruption. We stress that this additional effort is aimed at resolving some outstanding issues around delivery changes in a number of offices.”

He added that this was a very small number compared with the 65,000 delivery rounds made on a weekday or Saturday.

If everyone stuck together them RM would be forced to treat us better,
But while we have people not willing to sacrafice in the short term for the good of the long term then we'll ALL will continue to be shafted.

BUT the members who voted YES for the agreement are the ones complaining the MOST. Still coming in early, still throwing out d2d's in their own time, still running around to get home 5 mins. early...Then complaining that the deal is S=-t
Well they should have read the agreement details instead of only looking at the headline that detailed the ££££ for signing up.
