Councillor left disappointed at Post Office axe

A DECISION by Post Office Ltd not to replace a city post office has left Plymouth councillor Joan Watkins feeling 'bitterly disappointed'.

The post office, situated in Pennycomequick in Stuart Road, closed in May 2010.

At the time, a spokeswoman for the Post Office said the company was considering its options going forward.

The company told The Herald: "Post Office Ltd has considered all options but has not been able to restore a service. We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience."

The decision does not sit well with Stoke ward councillor Joan Watkins (Conservative).

She was involved in a popular campaign to open the post office in Pennycomequick - a shop located just yards from the previous post office which closed in 2008.

"When I first heard about their decision, I was bitterly disappointed," she said.

"The city council and I had worked very hard to open a post office in the western part of the city centre."

The post office closed after being open for just two months.

Councillor Watkins said: "As it is now, the elderly and mothers with young children have to take a long trek to Mutley Plain or the city centre.

Cllr Watkins encouraged any local business interested in opening a post office service to contact either herself or the city council.
