Postal workers have said they are not being given the support they need to deal with a backlog of pre-Christmas mail.
The delivery office in North Road has been experiencing long queues since before Christmas, with customers reporting having to wait more than 45 minutes to pick up their parcels.
Royal Mail bosses denied having any backlog at the Brighton collection office and said extra staff were being brought in to deal with the delays.
However whistle blowing staff within the office said that staff’s hours had been cut, packages were piling up and Christmas cards were sill being delivered.
A postman, who has worked for the Royal Mail for 20 years, told The Argus: “There is still even a backlog from Christmas. This is because they haven’t got enough staff but are refusing to employ more staff, trying to do everything as cheap as possible, with the customer furthest away from their mind.
“In the end they were bringing in managers from other offices to deliver packets because we were so short staffed.
“I delivered a Christmas card on Tuesday dated December 16. How can they say they aren’t behind?
“We used to clear our office of packages every day, but for the past two months there is always mail left in the office. “If customers could have the seen amount of mail left today, they would feel the disgrace and embarrassment I felt.”
A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail apologises to our customers who have experienced queues at our Brighton Delivery Office. “Additional resources were put in to the caller’s office before Christmas and these have been maintained. We are currently looking at other changes we can introduce in the office to improve the service. “Customers can also choose either online or by returning the card left at their address to have any items that are being held to be redelivered to their premises, to a neighbour or sent to a local post office for collection.”
MPs yesterday approved the privatisation of the Royal Mail by voting in favour of the Postal Services Bill.

Re: Brighton postal workers blame "lack of support"
Strange that they are always "LOOKING at what they can do to improve things" - has it never occurred to them to actually make a decision to DO something to improve things?
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile
