A POSTMAN was threatened with a large 'Rambo style' knife by a man who wrongly believing he had stolen £10 cash from a letter.
Steven Baxter went out looking for the postman after discovering that a recorded letter for his daughter had been put through his letter box without a signature being requested and with the Christmas present contents removed.
He spotted the postman, Sean O'Donoghue, and demanded the return of the cash and produced the weapon with an eight inch blade, a court heard.
"You have ten seconds to give me the money back," Baxter told the man, who was scared as he had no money to give him.
Harry Pepper, prosecuting, said two women across the road shouted at Baxter to put the knife away and Baxter jogged off threatening: "You've got 30 minutes to get my money or I'll come and find you."
The police were called and when quizzed Baxter apologised for going out with the weapon, which was seized. When interviewed he said his intention had been to scare the postman and get the £10 back, said Mr Pepper.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that the victim was left traumatised and suffered sleepless nights.
Jailing 24-year-old Baxter for six months Judge David Harris, QC, said that he has a previous conviction for assault and a jail sentence would have a greater deterrent effect than sending him on a thinking skills programme.
"It has been made clear that the courts have got to respond to the epidemic of possession and use of knives in public with an appropriate level of sentence," he said.
Baxter, of Harrow Crescent, Leigh, pleaded guilty to affray and possessing an offensive weapon.
Duncan Phillips, defending, said that Baxter regrets his actions. He had told police where the knife was and admitted his responsibility.
"He accepts his behaviour was wrong and out of proportion to the problem. He had put two and two together and made five."
