A POSTMAN who has been doing the rounds for over forty years was thanked at a surprise retirement party by the people he delivered to.
Before he retired in November, Brian Clarke from Tiverton has been delivering the mail in Bolham, Cove, Bampton and Stoodleigh. At the party he was presented with various vouchers worth £450 which residents had donated in a box at Bampton Post Office.
The event was organised by residents Margaret Hayes and Caroline Denscombe who kept it a complete surprise from Brian who thought he was going for a retirement meal with his close family. He said: “When I walked into Bampton Village Hall where the party was, I didn’t have a clue what was going on.
“I don’t know who they got all the people there without me knowing, and how my wife Dawn kept it a secret from me.
“As well as the party, in my last week as a postman I was given lots of personal gifts and numerous cards thanking me for my service, all with heartfelt messages which meant so much to me.”

With privatisation looming, they should have Brian stuffed and mounted, today's teenagers could simply marvel that anybody could, and indeed did, complete as many as 40 years service with one company, something many, many, teenagers will never experience.

Sorry but I thought the punchline was going to be 'F*** him, give him a pound, the dinner was my idea'
