Leeds accident victim is carried along road on van bonnet

A pedestrian was seriously injured when he was hit by a Royal Mail van and carried on its bonnet.
The 39-year-old was struck by the red Mercedes Sprinter Parcel Force van on Wednesday evening on East Street, Leeds.

The van is believed to have been heading away from the city along the dual carriageway when it collided with the man as he crossed the road close to the junction with Cross Green Lane, Richmond Hill, Leeds, at about 5.35pm

The man is believed to have been carried on the front of the van for a short distance before the vehicle was able to come to a halt and attention summoned to help the accident victim.

Initially at the scene it was thought that the pedestrian was not badly hurt, but later it was discovered when he was thoroughly examined that he had suffered serious internal injuries when he was taken by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.

The driver of the van, which is believed to have been returning to the Parcel Force depot in Stourton, Leeds, when the accident happened was uninjured, but shaken.
