Firework sparks alert at Royal Mail

The Royal Mail sorting office on Tomb Street in Belfast city centre was briefly evacuated after a parcel containing a firework went off.

Police and fire crews attended the scene of the alert.

No-one was injured during the incident.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said : "We can confirm that Royal Mail House in Tomb Street, Belfast was briefly evacuated at 11.00am this morning after a small packet containing a firework went off in the National Returns Centre. Police and fire and rescue services were called to the scene. No staff were injured and there was no disruption to service."



The bomb squad is examining a suspicious device at the centre of a separate alert in the east of the city.

The object was reported outside a house on London Street, near the Ravenhill Road, at about 7am.

The alert is ongoing and cordons have been put in place.
