Peterborough - Postal van is stolen

A HUNT was launched after a Royal Mail delivery vehicle was stolen while on its rounds in Peterborough.

A postman was delivering on his usual route in Wainman Road, Woodston, yesterday when a thief jumped into the white Ford Transit van and made off at about 10am. The usual Royal Mail vehicle was out of action for the day.

The crook targeted the vehicle as the postman delivered mail on the Wainman Industrial Estate.

But he thought it was a prank pulled by his friends at Safeguard Hire, where he usually stops for a chat.

Gianni Santoro, who works at the plant hire firm, said: “When he realised it had been stolen he was really shaken and upset. I guess the thief must have followed him and waited to pounce.”

It was found at 12.30pm by Royal Mail about a mile away in Campaign Avenue with the post still in the back.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said they were carrying out an investigation and helping the police.

Officers have done house-to-house enquiries and are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the police on 0345 456 4564.

Should have took it out with him and locked it up, everybody has been warned what would happen if they leave the keys in a the van gets stolen.

I feel for the guy, he must have a mortgage and family to pay for, dismissal is a certainty.
