POSTAL deliveries in a seaside town had to be cancelled after an outbreak of illness hit a sorting office.

Emergency workers were called in to deliver a back-log of mail in Harwich on Sunday morning after up to eight members of staff called in ill on Friday and Saturday.

Residents said up to 18 roads in the town were blacklisted on one of the two days and did not receive any mail as a result.

Paul Turvey, of The Vines, said: “The post office was hit with flu with about eight people off sick.

“They dropped nine roads from their routes on the Friday and another nine roads in the town on Saturday.

“Of course that meant they had a back log and they had to call in emergency posties on Sunday to help clear it.

“I’m disappointed they couldn’t have dealt with it better at the time.”

However, Mr Turvey praised staff for working on Sunday.

“I was very pleased,” he said.

“It was very strange to see a postman walking up my road on a Sunday morning at 8.20am.

“But I was waiting for a part for my laptop and because it arrived that day it meant I could get it fixed ahead of the working week.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Staff absences on Friday and Saturday in our Harwich Delivery Office meant that we were unable to clear the office of all the mail on those days.

“Additional resources were put in place, some deliveries were carried out on Sunday and the office is now clear of all mail.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
