Delivery office evacuated over suspect package

STAFF and customers had to be evacuated by police after a suspicious package was found in a Royal Mail delivery office in Sunbury.

Specialist police units and fire and rescue teams were called to the site in Staines Road West on Thursday, January 6 after a member of the public reported an envelope filled with white powder had been found.

The area was closed down shortly after 8am by Surrey Fire and Rescue teams as a precaution while investigations were carried out into the substance.

A Royal Mail Spokesperson said: "We have well rehearsed procedures for dealing with any such instances and will always involve the emergency services upon the discovery of any suspicious substances in the mail. The safety of our people is our prime concern."

People were evacuated from the premises and kept at a distance of 50 metres from the building while the substance was tested.

A spokesperson from Surrey Police said: “Surrey Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service were called to a business address in Staines Road West in Sunbury on Thames shortly after 8am on Thursday, January 6 following reports from a member of the public of a suspicious package. A white powder was found in an envelope at the scene but following analysis by specialist units from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service the substance was determined to be non-hazardous.”

It has been reported that business returned to normal shortly before 10am on the same day.
