Dog attacks are regularly reported in the news with two recent incidents being highlighted over the Christmas period. We heard of 52 year old Barbara Williams who was killed in Wallington and on Christmas Day there was television coverage of 11 years old Finn O'Mahoney's whose face was ripped open in a dog attack in Wolverhampton. Both attacks were in private homes on private property where the Dangerous Dogs Act doesn't apply.

John is now questioning Defra Minister of State James Paice MP and Minister Lord Henley on this issue and is supporting EDM 1202 on Responsible Dog Ownership. John Mann is also backing the postal workers union, the CWU's 'Bite-Back' Campaign which is calling for an extension of the dangerous dogs act onto private land alongside the introduction of Dog Control Notices, compulsory microchipping of dogs, third party Insurance cover for dogs and better enforcement and harsher court penalties.

John Mann said "this is not just a national issue, I am aware of cases in Bassetlaw where people have been bitten by dogs on private land and no action can be taken to deal with the dog. This is an unacceptable situation and action needs to be taken now to prevent a tragic accident from happening here?"

"We are all aware of the problems postal workers can and do face when delivering post to properties with aggressive dogs. But why do we tolerate postal workers having to take such dangerous risks when they are only trying to carry out their jobs? This is an issue that won't go away and the law needs to be tightened up immediately".
