UNION representatives are to meet with Labour leader Ed Miliband to raise concerns about the future of hundreds of jobs at a Royal Mail call centre.
Members of the Communication Workers' Union (CWU) launched a petition against Royal Mail plans to review its facility at Etruria after news of the proposals emerged in November.
Representatives met with the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce yesterday to discuss the campaign, and regional secretary Lee Barron is planning to raise it with Mr Miliband when he visits Birmingham next Thursday.
Mr Barron said: "We had a really constructive meeting with the chamber and we're hoping that Mr Miliband will be able to put some political pressure on ministers.
"Royal Mail has taken a disproportionate amount of roles out of Stoke-on-Trent in recent years and it's not sustainable in an area that really needs jobs."
Closing the centre would lead to the loss of 400 jobs.
Royal Mail says it is reviewing its customer services bases across the country, but maintains no decision has been made about the Etruria centre's future.
CWU members will be in Leek today seeking signatures for their petition against the review.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I would have thought it made sense to move the call centre to Mumbai - with the increase in customer complaints and the difficulties in the sort of translation process, it could prove beneficial........the complaints go up in reality but folk hanging up in frustration means the logged call rate goes down......brilliant strategy.

Have you tried RMs Customer assistance call menu - its the computerised version of your suggestion and its even cheaper. I think it was the first thing they modernised.

Oh none of that will change, you now have the added benefit of when you actually get through to someone it's," Good evening sah, dis am Ranjeev spikkin"....you immediately get the impression that this guy is going to be no help whatsoever and promptly hang up.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:dvbuk55 wrote:I would have thought it made sense to move the call centre to Mumbai - with the increase in customer complaints and the difficulties in the sort of translation process, it could prove beneficial........the complaints go up in reality but folk hanging up in frustration means the logged call rate goes down......brilliant strategy.
