Royal Mail made me miss pal's help plea

resident has spoken out about the Royal Mail delivery delays which led him to miss urgent news about a friend’s hospitalisation.

Walter Block’s post was among thousands of items held up in Leamington, Kenilworth, and Warwick, due to bad weather and changes in working practices.

Between December 18 and January 6, Mr Block, of Castle Close, recorded nine missed deliveries.

This included a letter letting him know that a friend had been hospitalised, which was post-marked on December 21, but did not arrive until January 7.

“She had fallen over on the ice, and sent a note asking me to help, but she had left hospital by the time that I found out, so she had obviously had to make other emergency arrangements,” he told the Times.

“But I really did need to do something about it before then.”

“Over some of this period, the wintery weather may have created some difficulty, but it must be noted that in previous periods of snowy and icy conditions, postal deliveries did not suffer – and over the same period milk and newspaper deliveries continued on time.”

The Communication Workers Union said the delays had been caused by changes which have included “slower” trolleys and vans being used, instead of postal workers cycling or walking with a pouch.

Mr Block said he knew the problems were not the fault of the individual postmen and women – but added things would be made much easier if there was better communication from Royal Mail.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “We apologise to customers who have been affected in the area by changes made to our local operation.

“While this has disrupted some services, all the mail in the area is being delivered to all addresses on a daily basis. Changes to local
delivery practices in some areas are part of Royal Mail’s commitment to modernising the business.

“Our local management are working hard to address the issues, and a series of measures are being taken to rectify the situation as soon as possible.”

On Friday the company’s managers were told to work over the weekend, in order to help clear the backlog.

Leamington and Warwick MP Chris White has also stepped into the row, requesting a meeting with senior Royal Mail managers.

Obviously not a close friend then and doesnt have a telephone contact, it seems letter writing is the only way to go nowadays yet we are told no one does it anymore, just another person getting on the kick Royal mail bandwagon i think

But this story is in the 'Coventry Telegraph' and in those parts there's a tradition of sending anyone to Coventry, or not talking to them, hence the need for writing a letter.

Wouldnt it be a more balanced investigation if Chris White MP had discussions with frontline posties,(private and confidential) as well as senior management to get a better picture of the chaos.

Chris White is a Conuservative MP so he probably wouldn't want to speak to anyone earning less than £40k a year. Party of the Bosses in the 80s is now exactly same but with a slighty better PR office.
