An Abernethy couple have issued a "huge thank you" to local Royal Mail staff who tirelessly searched for their lost passports.

Alan and Sandra Gourlay were forced to cancel a dream holiday when the delayed documents didn't turn up — but said their village postie and workers at the Breadalbane depot in Perth did all they could.

The pair were scheduled to begin their trip on December 28 but managed to change their flights to Hogmanay, hoping it would leave enough time.

Mrs Gourlay telephoned the UK Passport Office shortly after Christmas and was assured both her and her husband's passports had been picked up by FedEx and would be delivered the next day.

Suspicious, she then rang the courier service and was told they had been posted via Royal Mail.

Mrs Gourlay said, "We visited the Breadalbane depot on the 30th during the day in the hope the passports had arrived, but they hadn't.

"The guys were brilliant and went and had a look for us. They also organised for the night shift manager to be informed and phone us if the passports were found.

"We received a call at 3.15am on 31st to say they had found mine but not my husband's, but as there were more deliveries due in through the night they said they would keep looking."

She added, "My husband and I went in to the depot at 4am in the hope his would be found in time to catch the morning flight. However it was not there.

"We had to cancel our holiday in the end and my husband's passport didn't turn up until January 7 — one week after mine."

Mrs Gourlay said, "Despite this we would like to say a great big thank you to the guys and gals at Breadalbane for trying to save our holiday."

We don't deliver passports :hmmmm unless FedEx are now using DSA to deliver them (instead of the normal boys in private cars).

I am guessing it happened when the private couriers refused to deliver in Scotland because of the snow. A lot of them sloped them to us without telling customers apparently.

Will Fed Ex be fined for breach of contract? The whole idea behind DSA is to create competition, or so we are to believe. If this is the case, then they should be held responsible for the loss of holiday that these people have suffered. I can well remember when I renewed my passport. I was told a courier by the name of SDS would be delivering the passport due to the fact that our system was insecure.

My daughter had a new passport the other week and it was delivered by some courier in a car and it had to be signed for.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Yes, we do deliver them but not the newly issued ones from the passport office.
