Thieves snatch Christmas presents in Morden raid

Christmas presents were among the items stolen in two sorting office break-ins.

Royal Mail’s Morden delivery office was broken into in the early hours of December 29 - and targeted again less than a week later.

One resident, who asked not to be identified, said last week her postman had given her a parcel that had clearly been tampered with then re-sealed.

She said items missing from it included Christmas presents from her family in the United States.

A police spokesman said the London Road office was broken into at about 3am on December 29, when mail was stolen before the thieves fled after setting off an alarm.

The second break-in took place over the New Year weekend, when thieves stole letters and packages - opening some of them inside the depot.

Staff returning to work after the bank holiday discovered the crime and reported it to police.

Detective Constable Susan Temple, of Merton police’s burglary and robbery investigation team (Brit), said: “There may well be disappointed people who didn’t receive Christmas cards or other letters as a result of these offences.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail can confirm that there was a break-in over the weekend at our Morden delivery office.

"The police are investigating the matter and anyone with information should contact them. Customers with any concerns about their mail should contact our customer services on 08457 740740."
