A COUPLE who waited eighteen daysfor a bunch of flowers ended up with a blooming mess on their doorstep.
Raymond Gage and his wife Susan were excited to learn their granddaughter in Jersey had sent them some tulips in the post to mark their 47th wedding anniversary.
But nearly three weeks after they were sent, the flowers finally arrived – dead and looking like "a pile of mush".
The fuming couple, of King Henrys Drive, New Addington, also opened belated Christmas cards and gifts, having not received any post since December 22.
Mr Gage, 70, has demanded a formal apology from the Royal Mail over the fiasco.
He claims his regular postman had been on holiday over the festive period and was not replaced.
The retired HGV driver told the Advertiser: "I am absolutely disgusted by this. It is not on.
"If you go on holiday you expect someone to come in and do your job for you.
"This is the Royal Mail we are talking about, not some two-bob firm."
Mr Gage says the flowers were sent first class on December 17 in a box carrying the label "must be delivered before Christmas".
Similar packages sent by his granddaughter Natalie on the same day made it to other family members in Liverpool and north Yorkshire within 48 hours.
But Mr Gage and his wife only received their wilting flowers on Wednesday.
He added: "The disappointing thing was opening these flowers and seeing them look more like rotting leaves.
"They should have been pink tulips but they looked more like a pile of mush."
Other items which arrived in Wednesday's belated post included a Christmas card and a book posted on December 20.
The couple are still waiting for three other Christmas cards to arrive, including one posted on December 15.
The Advertiser contacted Royal Mail but it did not comment at the time of going to press.

Always look on the bright side - - -
